INSIGHTS
One word.
Different kinds of value.
Understanding the distinction between blockchain tokens, AI model tokens and service credits is the first step towards a useful tokenisation programme.
Three meanings worth separating.
| Term | What it means | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Blockchain token | A ledger-based digital representation with rules for issuance and transfer. Its rights depend on the programme and applicable law. | Ownership of a physical asset, assured liquidity or regulatory approval. |
| AI model token | A model-specific unit used to represent input or generated output. Tokenisation converts content into the units a model processes. | A cryptocurrency or transferable investment. |
| Compute entitlement | A contractual right to consume an agreed service, potentially represented by a digital credit or blockchain token. | Stored electricity, identical GPU performance or universal exchangeability. |

01 / ASSET TOKENISATION
The right matters more than the wrapper.
The Bank for International Settlements describes tokenisation as a way to combine records of assets with rules governing their transfer on programmable platforms. This can support new transaction arrangements, but the underlying institutions and settlement design remain important. Read the BIS analysis.
Malaysia’s Securities Commission distinguishes tokenised capital-market products from other digital assets. Tokenising a product does not remove the requirements that apply to that underlying product. Read the SC’s FAQs.
Tonickel’s design view: identify the exact holder rights, responsible counterparties and applicable market route before selecting the technology.
02 / PERMISSIONED TRANSFERS
Open standards. Defined permissions.
ERC-3643 describes interfaces for permissioned security tokens, including identity checks, transfer rules and lifecycle controls. Technical controls can help enforce programme rules; choosing a standard does not itself provide a licence or legal compliance. Read the ERC-3643 specification.
Tonickel’s design view: assess each standard against the instrument, custody model and target partners. Do not assume that every blockchain token should transfer freely.
03 / AI COMPUTE
A service unit needs a specification.
Input and output token volumes depend on the model and tokenizer. GPU capacity is a different measurement, and realised performance depends on hardware, workload, precision, configuration and service conditions.
Tonickel’s design view: specify the actual service first. A compute-credit programme should state its provider, eligible service, unit, expiry, pricing basis, transfer rules and remedy for failed delivery.
